Ancient Bead Necklace

This bead necklace features an ancient glass bead, Indo-Pacific beads, Venetian beads, gold beads hand made by Charley Hafen, finished with a 14 Karat gold clasp.

The large bead is an unusual Ancient Javanese Mosaic Bead, dated 750 - 1500 A.D., This bead was found in Java. These large, extra-ordinary mosaic beads derive from late Persian glass techniques. These crafts were brought to Java and Sumatra by the movement of trade by Arab and Indian merchants seeking sandalwood, ebony and spices from the islands. The bead has been stabilized and and is protected by a sterling silver sleeve in its perforation.

The small glass beads are from Southeast Asia and date from 750 - 1500 A.D. They were traded from China to Africa and are called Trade Wind beads or Indo-Pacific beads. They were probably the most widely traded bead of all times.

The two red tubular beads are Vintage Venetian beads dating from the 18th through the 19th Century and are from Africa. These beads are known as white-hearts for the white glass core covered with a translucent red glass. Originally this red color was created by adding small amounts of gold salts to the clear glass.

The other small glass beads are modern Japanese glass beads.

The gold hand made beads begin in sculpting wax. A substantial amount of 24 Karat gold is added to copper, silver and/or nickel. Each small batch of beads made has a different proportion of these metals. This is close to an alloy the Romans called Electrum. They are then cast in the lost wax process, a center hole drilled, smoothed and polished, with applied finishes such as hammered, distressed or left untouched.
