Ancient Bead Necklace

This bead necklace features an ancient Javanese glass bead, Roman glass beads, gold beads hand made by Charley Hafen, finished with contemporary Japanese beads and a 14 Karat gold clasp.

The large bead is a rare Ancient Javanese Mosaic Bead, dated 750 - 1500 A.D., This bead was found in Java and is considered to be a Indo-Pacific bead. These large, extra-ordinary mosaic beads derive from late Persian glass techniques. These crafts were brought to Java and Sumatra by the movement of trade by Arab and Indian merchants seeking sandalwood, ebony and spices from the islands. The bead has been stabilized and and is protected by a 14 Kt gold sleeve in its perforation.

The banded beads with the zigzag are Ancient Roman Glass Beads, dated 200 - 700 A.D. Certain beads that have zigzagging lines were supposed to confuse the ‘evil eye’ which would get lost in these lines.

The matte blue glass beads are modern Japanese glass beads.

The gold hand made beads begin in sculpting wax. A substantial amount of 24 Karat gold is added to copper, silver and/or nickel. Each small batch of beads made has a different proportion of these metals. This is close to an alloy the Romans called Electrum. They are then cast in the lost wax process, a center hole drilled, smoothed and polished, with applied finishes such as hammered, distressed or left untouched.
