Ancient Bead Necklace

This is a bead necklace made of ancient glass beads accented with contemporary 14 Karat white gold beads and clasp.

All of the small green glass beads are Indo-Pacific beads, sometimes called Trade Wind beads. These are beads from the Early Classical Period of Hindu Java, 750 - 900 C.E. These were made in Palembang, Sumatra. This necklace also contains a few assorted beads out of the African trade.

The featured central bead is an exceptional double eye bead. By their relative rarity, the double eye beads were highly valued. Identical striped and double eye beads have also been found in Afghanistan, dating from the same era.

Original Indo-Pacific bead-making techniques from India, 1st Century BC, were transferred to Funan, the first state in South East Asia, and then in 8th through 12th Century to the Srivijaya kingdom in Sumatra. After its fall, Indo-Pacific beadmaking disappeared in Southeast Asia.
