Ancient Bead Necklace

This is a bead necklace made of ancient glass beads accented with contemporary 14 Karat white gold beads and clasp.

All of the small dark blue glass beads were found in Java and are from the Early Classical Period, 750 - 900 C.E. They are Indo-Pacific beads, sometimes called Trade Wind beads. This necklace also contains various light blue beads that are from the Venetian and Chinese trade.

Beads of the Hindu-Java Classical Period 750 - 1200 C.E. were made in Palembang, Sumatra. By the time the Sailendra dynasty fell and the capital was moved to Jambi, Indo-Pacific beadmaking had disappeared in Southeast Asia.

The large central blue bead is a ‘Roman bead’, most likely made in Egypt and other locations in the Eastern Mediterranean 300 - 800 C.E. These ‘eye beads’ are thought to have been used as a magical amulet to ward off the “evil eye”.
