Ancient Bead Necklace

This is a bead necklace made of ancient glass beads accented with contemporary 14 Karat white gold beads and clasp.

All of the small dark blue glass beads were found in Java and are from the Early Classical Period, 750 - 900 C.E. They are Indo-Pacific beads, sometimes called Trade Wind beads. This necklace also contains various light blue beads that are from the Venetian and Chinese trade.

The nine long tubular beads are a type of White Heart bead. They were made in Venice from 1480 - 1830 C.E. and extensively traded to Africa, North America and the East Indies.

The red glass was originally compounded using actual gold salts. Therefore, an inexpensive white core was used and then covered with the red glass layer. Later, other European countries as well as India also began making this bead.
