Vintage Bead Necklace

This is a bead necklace made of vintage glass beads accented with contemporary 14 Karat yellow gold beads and clasp.

The small red beads are known as White Heart beads. They were made in Venice from 1480 - 1830 C.E. and extensively traded to Africa, North America and the East Indies.

The red glass was originally compounded using actual gold salts. Therefore, an inexpensive white core was used and then covered with the red glass layer. Much later, other European countries as well as India also began making this bead.

The central bead is a six-layer Venetian chevron out of the African bead trade. The built up layers of alternating colored glasses are exposed by rounding off the ends of the bead. This style of bead was first created in Murano, Italy in 1496 and was produced until the mid 20th Century.
