Vintage Bead Necklace

This is a bead necklace made of vintage glass beads accented with contemporary 14 Karat white gold beads and clasp.

The red beads are known as White Heart beads. They were made in Venice from 1480 - 1830 C.E. and extensively traded to Africa, North America and the East Indies.

The red glass was originally compounded using actual gold salts. Therefore, an inexpensive white core was used and then covered with the red glass layer. Much later, other European countries as well as India also began making this bead.

The large decorated white bead is another bead of Venetian origin. Some Traders refer to it as a Donner Bead. Similar beads were found amongst the remains of the ill-fated group of westward bound settlers crossing the Sierra Nevada in the winter of 1846-7.
